For most students, college life can be synonymous with living on a tight budget.  Countless expenses squeeze wallets each semester, culminating in a new found appreciation for sales and the Ramen Noodle dining plan.

But despite the strain on students’ finances, college life also has many benefits.  One perk is the many student specials for local arts events, most notably the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe and the Kimmel Center’s Free Concert for College Students.

Although the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe ( September 4-9) kicks off this Friday, there is still ample time to purchase tickets.  The  internationally recognized presenter of performing arts shows is offering discounted ticket prices to students on their website.   Also, check out this former post for more details about  this two week Philly based festival as well as the top three performance choices.

The Festival Bar is opened to anyone at least 21 years of age and is located at The Hub at 5th and Fairmount in Northern Liberties.  It becomes a lounge/club for Festival artists and fellow show attendees.  Drinks, dancing, and movie screenings are included.  Become a fan on Facebook or follow all Festival Bar activities on their website.  Oh and there’s never a cover charge?  Ever.

Another promising upcoming event occupying both the entertainment and affordability realms is the second annual Free Concert for College Students at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.

Philadelphia Orchestra

The event begins at 8pm on Wednesday, September 23.  The concert serves as a launch for the Kimmel Center’s eZseatU college ticket program which offers students unlimited subscriptions, understudy and rush tickets all at a discounted price.   The Free Concert event will include performances by the Philadelphia Orchestra and local college mascots and bands.   After the concert, there will be FREE food, a chance to meet with the Orchestra’s musicians, and a FREE performance by Civil Twilight of Cape Town, South Africa!

Civil Twilight is a relatively new but amazingly talented group.  Since the release of their self titled debut CD in 2008, their music has been featured on episodes of One Tree Hill (“Quiet in my Town”), Harper’s Island (“Letters from the Sky”), House (“Human”) and Without a Trace.

Follow Civil Twilight and their music on their Facebook and Myspace pages or visit the band’s official webpage.
